Elizabeth Warren: On the Right Track

Elizabeth Warren: On the Right Track

I’m proud that I don’t have to write another negative article about the baby boomers. For all you boomers out there, it’s not you that I despise, it’s your policies, ignorance, and poor choice in restaurants (How did Applebees get so popular anyway)?? The Massachusetts Senator announced today that she had developed a plan to forgive about 95% of student loan debt, that is $50,000 of debt per household earning less than $100,000 per year. She also wants to implement tuition-free college through taxing the wealthiest households and corporations in America.

This is an incredible gift to Millennials and Gen-Xers that are struggling to pay off their loans. I’ve been paying $405 per month since 2014. Half of my payments are just covering the interest. While I’ve made a dent in the principal balance, the interest keeps adding up. That’s a lot of cash I could have used to buy a house, invest and have a social safety net to cover emergency expenses. Instead, I’ve thrown that money back at the government that screwed me in the first place.

“But, it’s not fair! I already paid my loans off!!” It’s true. Life isn’t fair. That’s great that you’ve paid off your loans, but unfortunate that you won’t be receiving any additional debt forgiveness. The genetic lottery’s not fair. Where you’re born isn’t fair. Whether you’re born into wealth or poverty is not something you can choose. Policies aren’t going to benefit everyone, but instead of half-assing social policies like most of senior politicians, Warren understands that it’s going to take a more radical approach to free our generation from economic servitude. We’re all on Team Millennial and need to support each other. Even if my neighbor gets the full $50,000 in debt forgiveness and I only get $20,000, I’ll still be grateful.

Whether Warren’s moving further left to compete against the overwhelmingly popular Bernie Sanders in the Democratic party or if she generally cares about representing her young constituents, this is great for us Millennials with thousands of dollars in debt. With additional cash at my disposal, I’d be able to donate more than just my time to organizations and causes that I believe in. Thank you, Senator Warren, for thinking about us, and doing your best to turn the American Dream into a reality. School continues to be largely underfunded and college continues to be overly expensive. We have a long way to go. Thank you for being an ally of the Millennials!
