Use your Local Library!

Use your Local Library!

I don’t know how much money I’ve given to God-emperor Bezos at this point. This bothers me, so I spent about an hour looking for “The Library Book”, by Susan Orlean, at the public library. We’ll be reading it in our book club. There’s an overt joke in there, somewhere… Unfortunately, the book was a bit too new for the library, but I’ll use the local branch in the future. “The Mastermind” and “Poisoner-in-Chief” are also on my reading list. I was able to grab “The Mastermind” from the library, but I was forced to make Bezos even richer to get my original book. Amazon is ubiquitous and you can’t beat their prices, but the library is free and you already pay for it through taxes! Try the library, first!

Libraries are great resources for relaxation and taking a break from technology. They’re free of censorship and remain available to all of the public. I could easily spend an afternoon there, enjoying a quiet atmosphere. They may not be able to compete with Amazon for the newest books, but you’ve already paid for them. Always, always check your local library before handing even more money over to the richest man in the world. “The Library Book” cost $12 on Amazon. Most of that money will go to the publisher and Amazon, but I hope the author gets some percentage of that sale.

This has been a PSA to support your local library and used bookstores. I enjoyed every minute exploring the endless shelves and avoiding the omnipotent search engine. As always, try and shop local before relying on the corporations. Although Amazon makes retail so easy and efficient, the corporation has no community. There’s no sense of purpose or journey through clicking a couple links on Amazon. Try not to get too lost in technology. Explore your neighborhood, find the bookstores, and profit through your experiences.
